FY24 Impact Report
Violence is a constant threat to people in poverty.
Every day, people in vulnerable communities are being trafficked, enslaved, exploited and abused because their justice systems aren’t equipped to protect them.
But in the last year you helped change that reality for thousands of children, women and men.
Thanks to your support throughout the year, entire families who were once enslaved are living in freedom today. Children who were abused and exploited are now safe and protected. Men and women who were victims of violence are now survivors and leaders in their communities.
And we are that much closer to a world where all people can thrive in safety and freedom.
In 2023, you helped IJM and our partners:
Relieve
10,569children, women and men from violence
Restore
246survivors to safety, stability and strength*
Restrain
2,583suspected perpetrators of violence
Train
44,333justice system officials, community members and other NGO staff to better protect their communities
Convict
3,222traffickers and abusers in local courts
Note: The numbers in this report have been updated to reflect results achieved in fiscal year 2024, from April 2023 to March 2024
*This number represents survivors “fully restored” using IJM’s externally validated Assessment of Survivor Outcomes tool. There are thousands more survivors currently receiving support through participating in ongoing aftercare programs.
Faces of Freedom
If pictures are worth a thousand words, numbers are worth a thousand stories.
The numbers we report every year represent stories of real people whose lives have completely changed because you showed up.
They are sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, friends and neighbors and survivors who now live in freedom, without fear, because they are finally safe.
Modern slavery refuses to disappear quietly—it fights back. And so must we.
This past fiscal year has made history in the global fight to end modern slavery—and Canadians like you had a lot to do with it. Together we’ve achieved staggering landmarks, pioneering and winning hard-fought victories that have brought us meaningfully closer to a future where vulnerable people are safe and free. I’m so proud of this growing community of IJM partners and supporters who have helped make this progress possible.
But the hardest part of the journey is still to come. To put modern slavery and human trafficking out of business for good, we’ll need to fight harder, run faster and innovate on a greater scale than ever before.
In times like this, when violence has been deemed normal, we are called to stand in the gap between victim and perpetrator. Thank you immensely for standing with us. And if this past year has been any indication of what’s to come, a future of safety and freedom for all is looking brighter than ever.
Until all are free,
Anu George Canjanathoppil
CEO of International Justice Mission Canada
YOUR IMPACT AT A GLANCE
A ten-year partnership to end child sex trafficking in the Dominican Republic concludes with astonishing results.
When IJM’s office in the Dominican Republic first opened in 2013, children were openly trafficked in the streets, public beaches and parks. Traffickers had no fear of ever getting caught because they knew local police didn’t have the resources to stop them.
So IJM began a decade-long partnership with the local government to help strengthen the justice system’s ability to enforce laws effectively and protect children from this violent crime.
In 2023, the program concluded with astounding results.
A groundbreaking new study brings renewed hope in the fight to end online sexual exploitation of children.
A crime that can’t be detected can’t be stopped. That’s what makes online sexual exploitation of children (OSEC) one of the fastest growing and most dangerous forms of trafficking today.
This year, your support made it possible for IJM to collaborate with the University of Nottingham Rights Lab on the release of a new study that is a groundbreaking major step towards protecting children in the Philippines from OSEC.
IJM Canada joins hands with advocates, changemakers and government leaders from across the nation with a unified vision of freedom for all.
Solidarity against injustice grew deeper across the country as IJM Canada built strong partnerships with Canadian churches, non-profit organizations and influential government leaders.
In 2023, the team went on a nation-wide worship tour with Paul Baloche and Don Moen, partnered with a neighbourhood in BC famous for appearances in Hallmark Christmas movies, joined hands with Compassion Canada for a special event, held meetings with government leaders to strengthen policies to protect children and women, and more!
