IJM Canada supports progress of Online Harms Act to protect children globally

MISSISSAUGA, December 18, 2024 – International Justice Mission (IJM) Canada commends the advancement of the portions of Bill C-63 Online Harms Act addressing online child sexual abuse, noting this Bill is an important step to protecting children in Canada and globally. IJM Canada was pleased to see the Minister of Justice make the critical decision to prioritize the online safety of children and move these portions of the Bill ahead in the legislative process.

As the Bill moves forward, IJM Canada emphasizes the necessity to ensure that it not only addresses the protection of children within Canada but also extends its reach to protect children in other countries from harms perpetrated by Canadians. Highlighting the interconnected nature of online abuse, IJM Canada has made recommendations to the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights urging for provisions that prevent crimes across borders and promote a safer digital environment for all children.

Furthermore, IJM Canada underscores the importance of including the perspectives of victims and survivors of online sexual abuse in Committee as part of the legislative review process. By amplifying the voices and experiences of those directly impacted by Canadian offenders, the Committee can gain crucial insights into the harms of online exploitation and tailor the Bill to effectively address the needs and rights of survivors in and outside of Canada. By building survivor-informed policies and legislation, the Canadian government can lead the way in creating a victim-centered approach to combatting online child sexual abuse.

“The movement of Bill C-63, Online Harms Act, is a significant step for Canada, but there is more to do. With the constant evolution of online spaces and technology, it is imperative that legislation stay ahead of emerging risks and proactively protect vulnerable children in Canada and around the world from harm,” said IJM Canada CEO Anu George Canjanathoppil.
